Motorcycle Safety Resources: Maintenance and Inspection

Properly inspecting and maintaining your motorcycle is not all just about improving performance and increasing your bike’s life. Your safety and security is directly dependent on how thoroughly you inspect and maintain your bike’s safety systems. Before you head out on the road, you may want to address the following areas. Your overall motorcycle safety is dependent on it.

Motorcycle Safety Checklist

The integrity of your motorcycle’s safety system can change at a moments notice. To ensure optimal safety and performance, check the following systems before every ride.

  • Lights: All your lights should be in proper functioning order. This includes your head and tail lights as well as your brake lights and turn signals.
  • Tires: Your motorcycle should never leave the garage unless the tires are properly inflated. Motorcycle tires can lose air from one ride to the next. In addition to the proper PSI, you will also want to make sure that both tires are properly aligned and that there are not any loose spokes.
  • Fluids: This is more of a performance issue than a motorcycle safety issue. Never go out on a ride unless you properly inspect all your fluids. This includes oil, hydraulic, coolant and gas.

Motorcycle Maintenance before Your Tour

In addition to a daily safety checklist, you should also periodically have your motorcycle inspected by a trusted mechanic. This is especially true if you are planning a long or extended tour. Before you head out on your next bike trip, have the following systems inspected to ensure optimal motorcycle safety.

  • Brakes including cables and levers
  • Throttle
  • Clutch
  • Tires
  • Engine

While having your motorcycle inspected before you tour is a good idea, you should never have work done directly before your trip. Many times, repairs or changes to your bike can uncover some other mechanical problem. To ensure proper safety and security, it is best if you ride your bike for at least 100 miles before you leave on a trip.
